Position Overview

As Instrument Technician you'll be responsible for testing, repairing, calibrating, and maintaining electronic instrumentation systems. This role requires expertise in using traditional electronic testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, RF analyzers, EMF analyzers, high voltage testers and probes. You'll also work with specialized plasma diagnostic equipment. You'll work with a variety of electronic devices, with additional responsibility for diagnosing and analyzing plasma presence and properties. As part of the Production and Technology department, you’ll report directly to the Facility Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate oscilloscopes, RF (radio frequency) analyzers, EMF (electromagnetic field) analyzers, and very high voltage testers and probes to diagnose and resolve system faults
  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance of instrumentation to ensure optimal performance
  • Set up, operate, and interpret results from plasma diagnostic equipment, including:
    • Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) spectrometers for analyzing plasma composition through emitted light wavelengths
    • Time-resolved plasma imaging cameras for capturing high-speed plasma dynamics and behavior
    • Langmuir probes for measuring plasma density, temperature, and potential
    • Ball-pen probes for measuring plasma potential in magnetized plasma environments with reduced sheath effects
    • Faraday cups for measuring ion current and energy distribution
    • Plasma Emission Detectors (PEDs) for detecting and quantifying plasma presence and intensity
    • Wave cut-off probes for determining plasma density through electromagnetic wave propagation analysis
  • Ensure proper calibration, maintenance, and safety compliance of all plasma test equipment
  • Interact with technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals to perform troubleshooting and repairs
  • Interpret data from diagnostic instruments to confirm plasma generation and analyze relevant plasma properties
  • Adhere to safety protocols when working with high voltage equipment, RF/EMF hazards, and plasma diagnostics
  • Document findings, repairs, equipment calibration status, and testing results in accordance with company standards
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and maintenance personnel to resolve complex instrumentation and control issues

Required Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, RF and EMF analyzers, high voltage testers, and probes.
  • Strong background in electronic theory and troubleshooting digital and analog circuitry.
  • Experience with plasma diagnostic techniques and equipment (OES, relevant probes, Faraday cups, PEDs, and wave cut-off probes).
  • Ability to test and repair a broad range of electronic and plasma instruments and equipment.
  • Capability to analyze and interpret data generated by plasma diagnostic equipment for qualitative and quantitative assessment.
  • Thorough understanding of safety procedures relevant to high voltage, electromagnetic field exposure, and plasma operations.
  • Clear and precise with technical documentation and reporting.

Required Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and precision
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Systematic approach to troubleshooting and documentation
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in electronics, instrumentation, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • Certifications such as Electronics Technician or Instrumentation and Controls Technician preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in an instrumentation, electronics, or plasma diagnostics environment.
